Recipe: Date Squares (No Sugar)
INGREDIENTS
- 2 cups whole wheat flour
- 2 1/4 cups of oatmeal + 1/4 cups for the top
- 1 pinch of salt
- 1 teaspoon of soda
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla
- 1 teaspoon of nutmeg
- 1/2 lb butter or margarine
- 3 to 4 cups of cut dates
PREPARATION
- Preheat oven to 375 F.
- Grease a 9-inch square baking pan for thicker squares or 9 x 13 inches for thinner squares.
- Mix all dry ingredients with butter or margarine in a bowl
- Put the dates in a cauldron, cover with water and bring to a boil
- Reduce heat and simmer 10 minutes
- Press 3/4 of the oatmeal mixture into the bottom of the greased pan
- Add the dates and cover with the remaining gruel mixture
- Press lightly and spread 1/4 cup of oatmeal over
- Put in the oven for 25 minutes
- Cool and cut into pieces
